Professor Emeritus of Chemical Meteorology at Stockholm University, where he has worked since 1987, with a focus on sustainability and community science. He served as Executive Director of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) from 2004 to 2008 and was founding Director of the Swedish Secretariat for Environmental Earth System Sciences at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences from 2010 to 2014. He has held faculty positions at both Stockholm University in Sweden and the University of Rhode Island in the U.S., along with science administration positions outside academia. He currently serves as Senior Visiting Fellow and Chief Scientific Advisor at the International Sustainable Finance Centre (ISFC), Chief Scientific Advisor for the think tank Re-Define, and is a member of the advisory network for Systems7. He works with corporations, NGOs, faith-based groups, security and military organizations, and other stakeholders in sustainability. He also works with the Thriving Earth Exchange (TEX), an American Geophysical Union initiative that connects communities worldwide with scientific expertise to address local issues.
