Surya Karki

Surya is a pioneering education leader who is revolutionising access to quality education in the most remote regions of Nepal. The Director and Co-founder of UWS Nepal, Surya was raised in rural Nepal, where educational opportunities were limited. Despite a 2.5-hour walk to the nearest school and growing up in poverty, he completed his high school education at Budhanilkantha School and pursued higher studies at the United World College of Venezuela, the College of the Atlantic in Maine, and Schwarzman Scholars in China.

In 2015, Surya founded UWS Nepal with a vision to transform Nepal’s education system, believing that education had the power to change his life trajectory. He now leads the organization in overseeing project development, government relations, and innovative initiatives to strengthen education systems. Under his leadership, UWS Nepal has established 80 schools, educating over 20,000 children and impacting communities.

Before UWS Nepal, Surya co-founded Bloom Nepal Schools, focused on interest-based learning, and Delish Dairies, Nepal’s first Greek yogurt company. His exceptional contributions to education and sustainable development have earned him multiple awards, including the Prince of Wales and UNILEVER Sustainable Living Young Entrepreneurs Award (2014), Forbes’ 30 under 30 Asia (2017), and the Earth Impact Hero 2024 Award.

Surya is passionate about building sustainable education systems and creating lasting opportunities for children to succeed, with a commitment to improving Nepal’s educational landscape.
